‘Better-for-You’ products reduce fats, salt and sugar

Unilever is committed to reducing sodium, trans fat, sugar and saturated fat in our product portfolio.  In 2005, we conducted a fundamental review of our entire portfolio – 22,000 products worldwide and found that we had clear opportunities for reducing levels of fats and sugar for more than half of our portfolio.

Since then we have worked aggressively to enhance our products, balancing nutritional content with how a product tastes so that consumers continue to enjoy our food.  This is a difficult task for our product developers since, in blind tasting, consumers often prefer well-salted products or those with higher levels of fat.

43% of our products are now in line with accepted international guidelines, an increase of 15% over the past 3 years.

We have eliminated more than 33,000 U.S. tons of trans fat and 20,000 U.S. tons of saturated fat from our food and beverage portfolio to date.

Some of our initiatives in the U.S. toward our goal of enhancing the nutritional value of our product portfolio include:

  • Eliminating artificial trans fats from soft spreads:
    Removing all partially hydrogenated vegetable oil – the key source of artificial trans fat – from our entire soft spreads portfolio by Q2 2010, including I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!®, Brummel & Brown®, Shedd’s Spread Country Crock® and Imperial®. I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!® and Brummel & Brown® already started shipping non-hydrogenated tubs across their respective line-ups in August 2009.

  • I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® Cooking & Baking Sticks:
    Formulated to cook, bake and taste like butter, they contain a blend of nutritious oils, including soybean and canola; have 50% less saturated fat than butter; 0g trans fat per serving and provide an excellent source of Omega-3 ALA per serving.

  • Hellmann’s® Canola Cholesterol Free Mayonnaise:
    With no saturated fat or trans fat per serving; 1/2 the fat and calories of mayonnaise; and made with the goodness of canola oil, so it's naturally rich in omega-3 ALA*.


    *Contains 350 mg ALA per serving, which is 21% of the 1.6 g Daily Value for ALA, and 4.5g fat per serving.
