National Parks and the National Park Foundation

Unilever is a Proud Partner of America's National Parks

The long-term success of our business is interconnected with the vitality of the environment and the communities in which we operate, so one of our largest grant programs supports America’s National Parks and the National Park Foundation.

Unilever is committed to preserving and protecting America’s national parks for future generations.

With our National Parks program, we provide sustainable solutions to address critical park infrastructure needs and enhance the visitor experience.  In addition, we engage employees, consumers, and customers through volunteerism and education.

Unilever has worked side-by-side with the National Park Foundation for 16 years, helping to preserve and protect America’s nearly 400 national parks.  In fact, we are the longest standing corporate partner of the National Park Foundation, having contributed more than $50 million in cash donations and in-kind support.

America’s Best Idea

With sustainability at the heart of our partnership with the National Park Foundation, Unilever was proud to serve as the lead sponsor of a national celebration on the eve of the premiere of the highly anticipated Ken Burns documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. The national celebration took place in America’s national parks and included volunteer service projects, free admittance to the parks and a special sneak preview of the new film.

In addition, Unilever has contributed $500,000 to the National Park Foundation to support America’s Best Idea Grants. This initiative, inspired by the Ken Burns documentary The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, will make funding available to all 391 National Parks providing the opportunity for them to connect traditionally underserved communities in creating strong lasting bonds of stewardship with America’s national parks.

Recycling At Work:  Helping Build Our National Parks

Through our flagship “Recycling at Work” grants program, Unilever has donated 100% recycled plastic and sustainable lumber to more than 200 national parks for use in building boardwalks, docks, fences, site amenities and interpretive displays. For example, Unilever donated sustainable lumber which has replaced the entire boardwalk and decking system around Old Faithful and Midway Geyser Basins in Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first National Park.

To date, Unilever’s sustainable lumber donation represents more than 15 million of our plastic containers being recycled rather than going to landfills.

National Parks America Tour

Since 1999, Unilever has sponsored the National Parks America Tour, a volunteer-driven initiative designed to engage the public, our business partners and our employees in volunteer service-to-the land activities. Volunteers assist parks in completing important improvement projects that are based on individual park needs, such as beautification, infrastructure enhancements and overall park maintenance. Since the tour’s inception, more than 325,0000 volunteer service hours have been contributed representing a $5.5 million in-kind donation to the National Park Service.
