History – A California favorite conquers the globe!

Like many others in the early 1900s, Lawrence Frank went West looking for opportunity. He spent his first 15 years in Los Angeles helping his brother-in-law, Theodore Van de Kamp, turn a tiny potato chip shop into a multi-million dollar bakery empire.

During the early 1920s, Lawrence and another brother-in-law, Walter Van de Kamp, went into the restaurant business together and opened The Great Scot. After that, Lawrence established the Tam O'Shanter, a fairy tale-like Norman Inn which fast became a popular rendezvous for movie stars and local business people. Still operating to this day, it has the distinction of being the oldest restaurant in the Los Angeles area in the same original location with the same family ownership.
